There are times when stars align and magic happens. And you don’t even realize how magical this something was until it silently stares back at you. In my world, often through photographs. With Robyn & Graeme, magic simply happened.
One cold November day last year I was one facebook status away update from stars aligning just so. I mentioned I was excited for my upcoming trip to Dominican Republic and Robyn immediately e-mailed me, sharing that their belated Punta Cana Occidental Grand Flamenco honeymoon was planned around the same time. Done. Rob and I would embark on an 8-hour road trip through crazy streets and highways of the island to join them for a celebratory shoot.
We had stories to share from our road trip and a whole year to catch up on – Robyn & Graeme’s wedding was the first one for 2010 and this anniversary shoot would be the last one of the year. Pretty cool, right?!
We spent a few days at the beautiful Occidental Grande Punta Cana resort with these two, having some amazing conversations, laughs, dancing and … making beautiful photographs.
Robyn brought her wedding gown to DR so that we could do a ‘trash the dress’ shoot in the ocean… A loving note to her talented friend and designer Malene Grotrian – we were very gentle and your gorgeous gown survived 🙂 We walked along the beach near sunset and I found this amazing light. Oh yes. I’ll let the images speak the rest. I may have picked too many, but it was so hard to choose favourites.
We only shot with one lens, the 1.4L 35mm – because magic happened and it was enough. Rob, as always, was patiently blinding Robyn & Graeme with our reflector, to catch the sparkle in their eyes and lift the subtlest of shadows. Your know what else is cool?! The day after the shoot, Rob and I went back to this Paradisus Punta Cana, the resort where we happened to shoot… It just stood out to us as something special. It didn’t take long for us to realize that we may want to get married here… Whoa!! Everything just fit. We are shooting a wedding close to this resort in just a couple of days and will make the decision for good – but I really think this is it. Again, it just comes together sometimes.
