In a way, Jess has Craigslist to thank for meeting Trevor. She needed a place to live and saw an advertisement for a room to rent in a nice looking townhouse near her work. Jess remembers, “I met Trevor when I went to check out his friend’s (and best man’s) townhouse as a possible place to live. I’m pretty sure my first thought was one of relief upon meeting a potential roommate, because he ‘didn’t seem like a serial killer’.” When I moved in, we hit it off right away, and it didn’t take long to realize that there was chemistry. In the months that followed, we didn’t so much ‘start dating’ as we did organically grow together. Our ‘dates’ never really had a beginning or an end, because we already lived together! Now here we are, getting married, and enjoying an adventure together that feels like just the beginning.”
Trev: “It all started with a sweaty handshake, not sure if it was hers or mine. For about a month we slowly started talking in the common area after work. Sometimes we shared dinner and other times I would stay up late watching TV, waiting for her to get home from her second job just so I could say hello. At work, I spent more time emailing back and forth with her than I did getting any work done! A day after our first ‘non-date,’ we went out to meet up with some of my friends at a local bar. Somehow it ended up being just the two of us and we stayed out all night on the docks, until the sun came up.”
Jess & Trev live in a little ‘salt of the earth town’ called Ellicott City, Maryland.
Here’s their magical destination wedding at Excellence Punta Cana in Dominican Republic. Enjoy!
Jess found her perfect dress, Jenny Packham “Rose,” in Zurich, Switzerland before moving back to the States. Jess: “I love that it has elements that are both vintage and modern, while being feminine and unfussy. The delicate details on the dress are a work of art. I truly appreciate the craftsmanship.”
Top three things Trev loves about Jess: “I love her laugh and smile, her intelligence, and her thoughtfulness towards others.”
Jess: “I love cookbooks, HGTV, Jane Austen, historical fiction and crime dramas. I’m also a closet sci-fi and super hero lover. Trev and I like to watch NCIS, House Hunters, Black List, Person of Interest, Game of Thrones, and Criminal Minds together. Lately, we’ve really gotten into the show Fixer Upper because the host couple is so adorable and funny. While I’m a kindle convert, my two favourite books are my old paperback copy of The Fountainhead (held together with scotch tape) and my first edition of The Little Maid of Nantucket (which my grandma used to read to me over and over as a child). I’ve read them so many times that just holding them fills me with memories. There are a few movies that Trev and I can’t pass up on TV without watching. Forgetting Sara Marshall is our go-to favorite!”
Top three things Jess loves about Trev: “He is an amazing person: an old soul with a handsome face and makes me laugh every day. I adore his good heart, his kind eyes, and his rock-solid character. He is shy but confident. A man of few words but always has a witty zinger at the ready. He is trustworthy and trusting. He lifts me up with an incredible amount of moral support. He is my home, my partner, and my best friend. I can’t imagine my life without him.”
Jess: “I love that life with Trev is a partnership. He is supportive, kind, respectful, funny, strong and sweet. I know I can count on him for a good laugh and to be a pillar of strength when I need him the most. But, if we’re going to talk about the little things, I love that before he leaves for work at 5:50 AM, every morning, he ALWAYS wakes me up to tell me how much he loves me, give me a kiss, tells me to have a great day and to drive safe before he leaves for work. He starts each and every day with love.”
Jess: “When I’m upset, irritated, stressed or sad, nothing makes me feel better than the feeling of Trev’s fingers drawing on my back. In that moment, the world melts away, and it takes me to my happy place.”
Trev: “Jess is very consoling. She is always willing to listen to my problems no matter when or where. She knows just when to provide a solution and when to just be a sounding board. She’ll always give me a big hug though and tell me everything is going to be alright.”
Jess: “Trevor has the kindest eyes I’ve ever seen. When he laughs…a real, genuine, uninhibited laugh…I love the sound. He has a smile that lights up his whole face, especially when he’s laughing at his own joke after trying to keep a straight face. He gets this smile that just makes him looks so impish and pleased with himself…and my heart melts. Also, he has the sexiest bubble butt ever.”
Jess: “Trev’s hidden talents include: cooking the world’s best grilled cheese sandwiches, efficiently packing a trunk with lots of luggage, doing math in his head, strategizing Words with Friends, and making up new words to popular songs. I love to cook and am pretty good at it. At one point in my life, I was well known among certain circles for piano playing and singing. I can also put my hands on my hips and rotate my elbow forward so far that my arms look like they’re on backwards. Ha!”
Trev: “Jess is amazing on the piano and also a great chef!”
Jess on the Proposal:
“After 5 years together, I honestly didn’t see it coming. I still have no idea how he got the ring out on the balcony of our hotel room (or to Mexico for that matter) without me getting suspicious. We were at Excellence Playa Mujeres for a friend’s wedding. At that point, we had spent the last 1.5 years living together and apart because of our jobs – splitting our time between North Carolina and Switzerland. After room service breakfast on the balcony we lounged on the day bed, read our books, and talked about what we love about each other. Then Trev reached behind a pillow, pulled out a ring box and said ‘Jessica Hassay, I don’t say this often’…(no kidding)…’will you marry me?‘ He was shaking. I will never forget the look in his eyes. There were tears, his and mine. I said ‘Oh my God, yes!’ My heart was skipping all over the place. The ring fit perfectly, how did he know my size? He said, ‘you told me, like 3 years ago.’ Of course I remembered telling him, but I didn’t expect that he would. After all, he was sleeping when I whispered my ring size into his ear (so it could be unconsciously absorbed), haha!”
Trev adds, “I was super nervous about having checked the ring in my luggage and was very relieved when we got to the room and it was still there. I quickly put it in a hiding spot on top of the liquor cabinet where nobody would look. It was a couple days after the wedding. I was so nervous, but I’ll never forget the look of disbelief on her face. It was perfect.”
Jess’s favourite gift from Trev: “My favourite gifts from Trev are all the love notes that he’s hidden for me to find over the years, particularly during the two years that we were going back and forth from his place in North Carolina to our place in Switzerland and had to spend so much of that time apart. Over the years, I have saved every note, every silly drawing, every scrap of paper that he tucked here and there for me to find in my luggage, bed, laundry, and apartment. Reading them, over and over, has made me feel closer to him…even when I lived 6000 miles away.”
Jess: “If Trev had magical powers, he would have the ability to pick winning lottery numbers.”
Trev: “If Jess had magical powers, she would be able to fly.”
Ideal day together according to Jess: “A lazy mimosa brunch at home, followed by a walk in the park and an evening together with friends or family. At the end of it all, we fall asleep at home in our own bed knowing that we have nowhere we need to be and nothing we need to do the next day.”
Ideal day together according to Trev: “Pretty much any day where we have the whole day together is ideal. It starts with eating pancakes for breakfast, going for a walk in Annapolis (or Cape Cod) on a warm sunny day, grabbing a happy hour drink and then dinner somewhere. Then, stretching out and watching a movie.”
Jess’s guilty pleasures: “Trev’s fingers tracing up & down my back, the feeling of silk on my fingertips, cotton or bamboo scented candles, prosecco,Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and fresh cut flowers.”
Trev’s guilty pleasures: “Anything sweet.”
Jess’s favourite things to find in the fridge: “Prosciutto and an assortment of cheese! Also, unsweet ice tea and La Croix lemon sparkling water. Oh, and prosecco or cava or champagne, of course.”
Trev’s favourite things to find in the fridge: “Grilled chicken breast, cheese and beer.”
Jess’s nicknames for Trev: “A few of my nicknames for Trev are Cake Face, Grape Toes, You Big Grape, Handsome, Jonesy, and T-rex. Truly, I don’t remember the first time I used any of these nicknames, but I know I’ve been using them for years.”
Trev’s nicknames for Jess: “We have always joked around with each other calling each other ‘beluga whale,’ or ‘cake face.’ We were watching a nature show one time and they said that lobsters only have one partner for life. Since then we tell each other ‘you’re my lobster.’“
Jess: “With Trevor, I feel like a world of possibilities are open to us because we lean on each other and support each other as individuals, which makes us that much stronger together. He fills my days with laughter and love. When I am with him, no matter where we are, I am home.”
Trev: “My life is so much better with Jess in it. She has given me the confidence to get jobs by helping me prepare my resume and getting me ready for interviews. She is my biggest supporter and is happy to be there laughing along with me. I’ve been able to travel around the world and see sights I may never have seen if she wasn’t in my life. We have some of the best friends that anyone could ask for.”
Most romantic memory together according to Jess: “My most romantic moments with Trevor are usually when we are just enjoying a quiet night at home, in our element, being comfy and cozy together, making dinner and relaxing. However, if I had to name a few romantic adventures they would include a bottle of wine on our hotel balcony in Barcelona, long walks around Annapolis and Charleston, and chasing each other down the beach on a windy day on Tybee Island. Also, the first time Trev sent me flowers will always make me smile.
About a month and a half after I moved into the townhouse and met him in our shared home, I went to Cape Cod to visit my aunt and uncle. We weren’t even officially dating at that point, but Trev googled the address and sent flowers to my aunt and uncle’s house to surprise me. It was in that moment that I knew he had a big, soft heart.”
Most romantic memory together according to Trev: “I remember Jess getting the offer for her position in Switzerland – we were at her mom’s house in Alabama on vacation. Jess was hesitant about taking the job because she thought that the distance would split us up. I told her that she should take the job and that I would love nothing more than to quit my job and move to Switzerland with her. A couple months later she was on a plane to Zurich and a few months later I would be too!”
Special thank you to wonderful wedding planner Livia!
First dance: “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat rings true to our relationship, particularly after living abroad and spending two years going back and forth between Switzerland and the States. The words to the song remind us of all the places, faces, and things that we’ve done and seen – together and apart – over the last 7 years. We truly are lucky.”
