I haven’t blogged for a while… And the reasons not to were all too forgiving – too much time on the road, too much on my mind, then 20K of precious equipment stolen out of my car, including a laptop that I treated like my firstborn. I sit here, thinking of all the beautiful people and things I want to tell you about, and also of the times I’ve nearly pulled out my hair in these past few weeks… So where do I start? Perhaps from a point of near-exhaustion and simultaneous revival. Christy & Darren’s wicked engagement shoot on the shores of Ambleside Park in North Vancouver – which would also be the last shoot I had done with my faithful Canon 5D Mark II and my three favourite lenses, 50 1.2, 24-70 2.8, and 70-200 2.8. I promise to tell you the full story when it has a happy ending… or an ending of some sort. But for now, here are the images that made me feel alive that day.
Christy and Darren have been together for eight years… And looking back at the vibe I felt during the shoot, it was more of a celebration of who they are to each other always… and how they love each other always. I must confess, having shot a wedding the day before, Rob and I were pretty drained, especially knowing that right after the shoot we had to pack up our suitcases and drive straight to Seattle, Washington for the WPPI Conference. But the moment we got to the beach, turned on the music and kicked off our shoes, I got my second wind.
Are you kidding me? Christy is my superstar. She grew up in North Vancouver, so anything was game – she walked straight into the ocean with such grace, while the rest of us were hesitantly rolling up our jeans. And then I saw a baby seal. I immediately got told it wasn’t a baby, but it was just so cute. It made my day.
There’s my baby seal. So sweet. I didn’t grow up by the ocean, so any time I see one, I jump around in excitement like a child.
I gasped when this image appeared before me. I mean, I know I kind of set it up, but it really speaks volumes to me. If Darren wasn’t around, I would have thought she’s looking out for her one and only handsome sailor! Somehow our North Vancouver engagement photo session turned into a full-blown ‘Creative Bridal’ session, or Trash the Dress, as some like to call it. Christy is magical…Rob acts all cool, but I caught his real excited face… Ha.And here’s what was in front of him…It may not look like there’s much going on in this photo, but I’m really fond of it. The ocean is freezing cold, the wet heavy dress is clinging to Christy’s shivering body, and all of us (Darren, Rob, and I) are looking at her with admiration, projecting our thoughts that ‘it will be sooo over soon’ – and despite all this, she finds a moment of quiet bliss, just sitting there. So still and beautiful.view portfolio | let’s connect on facebook & twitter | email katya
