Photographing a destination wedding in Italy has been my dream for years. The experience of documenting Lillian & Vincenzo’s incredible wedding in Abruzzo surpassed our expectations and I’m giddy with excitement now that we’re ready to share our labour of love in this post.

Vincenzo grew up in this region, and finally was bringing his beautiful fiancee Lillian Elein here, to be married by a priest who’s known him since Vincenzo was a little boy.

… Lillian & Vincenzo met in Bologna, Italy, some 7 years ago. ‘We were members of the same gym,’ Lillian remembers. ‘A friend of mine who worked for the gym was hosting a happy hour on an off-night and really wanted me to go even though I didn’t want to. I kept making excuses and was finally having success with the line, “I don’t have a ride home.” At that moment Vincenzo walked by and my friend said, “That blond guy has a car, he can take you home. “Hey, you! Can you give her a ride home after the happy hour tonight?” Vincenzo apathetically shrugged yes, and I rolled my eyes and finally admitted defeat. Grudgingly, I went to the happy hour (I had previously exchanged a few words with Vin, so he wasn’t a complete stranger!). We started chatting and exchanged numbers. I fell in love (and very deeply so!) with Vincenzo a couple of weeks later, after we had been on a few dates and I was realizing that slowly but surely Vincenzo was checking off all the “criteria” I had playfully kept in mind for a dream boyfriend . Not only did he fit my silly checklist – which I can’t even remember at the moment – but he also surpassed every ideal and expectation by showing what a well-rounded, intelligent, funny, and handsome gentleman he was.’

Since then, they’ve traveled the world together, and have shared a home in New York and in Paris, France.

The day before the wedding, family & friends gather at Vincenzo’s family home for a wine tasting, before heading on a walking tour of his hometown, and finally, ending the night with a beautiful dinner.

The history of this remarkable site spans hundreds of years. Recent archeological excavations have shown the presence of tombs and other constructions dating back to 6th – 7th centuries. References to Venus allude to the presence of a temple of the Goddess here, which would have been built in 80BC and demolished around 540AD, erecting a monastery in its place. Expanded and fortified in the early 12th century, the abbey prospered in glory and splendour. After periods of decline and a series of damages during WWII, the church and what remains of the monastery are majestically restored and remain a national monument.

‘My life and all the experiences within it are better because Vincenzo is extraordinarily thoughtful and does everything in his power to make every experience, however mundane it might be, extraordinary.’

‘Elein gave me a new perspective. Everything I do now reflects that new perspective so in a way I would say she has changed my life.’

Lillian’s guilty pleasures: ‘Desserts! Cookies, frozen yogurt with oreo topping, gelato, macaroons, cheesecakes, pies… I can go on and on.’

Vincenzo’s guilty pleasures: ‘A great home-cooked steak dinner followed by a walk to our favorite pastry shops in NY for an incredible key lime pie.’

ONE MONTH ANNIVERSARY REFLECTIONS:

What did you love most about your wedding?

Lillian: ‘The music and dancing. We had an incredible band/DJ and as the day progressed we had different styles of music – everything from ballroom to salsa to pop and even house. Everyone gave their all on the dance floor and even taught each other new dance steps. It was awesome!’

Vincenzo: ‘That the day went out without a glitch. We were able to fully enjoy it and will remember the day we spent with our friends and family when we danced until complete obliteration.’

Any regrets? What would you have done differently if you could?

Lillian: ‘The day was perfect. We even got sunny skies when we were expecting rain! The only complication we had was getting our guests back to the hotel at the end of the night since our younger guests were having too much fun to leave while our older guests were tired from a 14+ hour day of celebrating!’

Vincenzo: ‘No regrets!’

Most memorable moments from the Wedding?

Lillian:

  • ‘The day before our wedding activities officially began, we celebrated Vincenzo’s mother’s Birthday. It was a low-key family gathering at his home.  When we thought it was time to sing Happy Birthday, we were surprised to see Vincenzo’s friends serenading us outside of the house! It’s a tradition in Vincenzo’s town for the groom to gather friends and serenade the bride at her home before the wedding. Since we didn’t organize this ourselves, one of Vincenzo’s groomsmen took it upon himself to gather friends to serenade us both and surprise us! It was wonderful.’
  • ‘During our portrait session with Katya and Rob we found an abandoned chapel on the restaurant property. Katya asked me to sing a song to Vincenzo and I got to sing the first song I ever sang to him in a very intimate and wonderfully acoustic setting.’
  • ‘Vincenzo hugging me on the dance floor at the end of the night whispering sweet nothings into my ear and then having all of our friends give us a group hug while jumping to the beat of the music.’

Vincenzo:

  • ‘When I had to go on stage in our town’s theatre in front of everyone and declare my love for Lillian because Katya Nova insisted I do that.’
  • ‘When I opened a bottle of champagne on the morning of the wedding before going to church, breaking every possible tradition for an Italian wedding – yet setting the tone for the day.’
  • ‘When we were about to get married and we were sitting on a bench in the middle of the church where everyone was looking at us but I couldn’t help but notice the 2 pigeons behind the stained glass window behind the priest that were getting it on.’

Any advice for future brides?!

‘Worry, stress, and be as detail-oriented as you feel you need to before your wedding. (For me, it’s practically impossible to avoid the stress!) But when your Wedding Day comes, make the decision that it will be fabulous no matter what and it probably will. Our wedding did not go 100% as planned, but we took it in stride, and enjoyed the beauty of all of the love from all of the people who were there for us. Everyone had a wonderful time.’
